It’s amazing given the WEALTH of information available to anyone on the internet about SEO, that some people and even some actual agencies (by golly!) still get it wrong.
After accidentally embarrassing Lisa Myers on Twitter (sorry Lisa!) I was inspired to collect some examples of the worst advice people have received from hobbyists, freelancers, fly-by-nighters and full on SEO agencies, here are the top 7.
Crap Tip #7
‘Keyword stuff you HTML comments’ (Thanks to @GrosenFriis) – original tweet credit here!
Crap Tip #6
‘Bold tags in the <head> title help SEO’ (Thanks to @peteyoung) – original tweet credit here!
Crap Tip #5
‘When buying a domain include the word nude’ (Thanks to @tnash – original tweet credit here!
Crap Tip #4
‘Sorry your site can’t be opimised, it’s in Javascript’ (Thanks @LisaDMyers) – original tweet credit here!
Crap Tip #3
‘Google likes to see that you have bought links’ (Thanks @Yoshimi_S) – original tweet credit here!
Crap Tip #2
‘Put all your URLs and keywords into the robots.txt file becuase that tells Google what to index’ (Thanks to @NortonLegg) – original tweet credit here!
And finally (drumroll please) the final, best, bravest Crap Tip of them all (hushed silence):
Crap Tip #1
‘Links aren’t important, they’re not included in the algo.’ (Thanks to @chriscathcart) – original tweet credit here!
It was a tough call between the top two, given that both are completely retarded but the links wins the prize! If anyone else has any crap tips they would like to add to the mix please do so!
Free Extra Crap!
This post has inspired more crap tips so in no particular order here are some Extra Crap SEO Tips!
Extra Crap Two for One
‘Put all your copy in H1 tags’ and ‘Hide lots of keywords behind images’ (Thanks @Whole 9 Yards) – original tweet credit here!

Is anyone else long enough in the tooth to remember Top Pile?
basically software generated cloaked redirected pages on their own domains. They “guaranteed” listings, thankfully Google blacklisted their technology and they were no more.. we fought for years against them in pitches trying to convince clients that ‘too good to be true’ is exactly that and that whitehat is the only acceptable practice for a reputable company!
They guarantee was utterly worthless on actually reading it as well!! ahh those were the days
Ah mr Craven, I have a tear in my eye! All the memories from the old JH days.
Good old Top Pile. Remember when we got asked into Freecom to pick up all their old clients as Top Pile had gone bust? And when we ripped them open on the Actinic forums?
Never go back to that now. Its all different.
Having said that, Shaz could have probably sold Top Pile better!
SB
Ha, Top Pile. I used to work for there sister company netvillage back in 1999. I paid no attention to what the Top Pile bit of the company did, and was astounded years later to read about them
This is like reading the Old Testament!
Indeed i do though i seem to remember that we didint actually win any contracts
was it top pile that got BMW black listed or was that some one else?
those were dark days.. black hatters are at in a totally different league now but stil glad we kept and still keep to the light side
