Bloom call in for a mince pie or two at 42 the Calls

Writing, baking, candlestick making – we creative types will turn our hand to anything given the opportunity, so, when the lovely Jenny at boutique hotel and private dining venue 42 The Calls invited us to a creative masterclass in mince pie making, our interest was well and truly stirred.

The evening of festive creativity came about after Jenny dropped off a batch of mince pies fresh from the kitchen of 42 The Calls for the Bloom team to sample. So good were these pastry delights that we collectively ‘oohed’, ‘aahed’ and promptly began to crave more. We got in touch with Jenny, who said if we wanted more, we should come and learn how to make them. And so we did.

Last Tuesday, a small team of Bloomers arrived at 42 The Calls to be greeted by some delicious warming mulled wine, all the ingredients we’d need to make our own batch of mince pies and the 42 The Calls chef – the very knowledgeable and nice Nigel.

Even the experienced bakers in the team learnt a thing or two from this culinary guru, who shared all his tips of the trade and planning trips for Christmas. He also shared some of his sensational sweet mince, which had been prepare a whole six months earlier in order to achieve a full, rich and zesty flavour.

We even got to take home a few pies for later consumption! All in all it was a night that totally satisfied our blooming creativity and greed and we’ll certainly be banging on Nigel’s door for more tips in the future.Surprisingly, all of our mince pies turned out quite well.  Some were better than others naturally, notably those made by Alex Fisher and I, however, all were edible and eat them we did, along with generous helpings of brandy pouring cream.
