The code for success? Get integrated.
If you were to ask me what an integrated agency was at the end of my university degree, I wouldn’t have been able to give you a very good answer. Problem solving from a young age is what got me into coding, although I wasn’t exactly sure what role it would play in my future. I decided to study for three years at University to see if I could turn my passion into a career.
The course I chose seemed to try and cram snippets from multiple IT related jobs into one degree. The bottom line was, it didn’t work. At the end of my studies I was left in a similar position to many other students; being even more confused about my career than ever before.
Fast forward a little over a year and I’ve never been more focused and certain of my career path. Coming into Bloom for my first day in the real world was incredibly nerve-racking – as is anyone’s first day at a new job. But it didn’t take me long to settle in, get to know the surroundings, the people and the general flow of work.
To keep me afloat during university I took on small freelance projects, which often turned into monumental tasks. You need to be experienced in project management, digital marketing, UI web design and of course whatever programming language(s) the website requires, and that’s just for starters! So to enter into an agency that could take care of the rest and let me get on with what I’m best at was a real treat.
That being said, it didn’t mean that everything was going to be smooth sailing. From the very beginning I was thrown straight in at the deep-end and tasked with working on a project for a globally established company – something I wouldn’t have thought I’d be doing for at least a few years. Suddenly all of that HTML and CSS that I learnt before university came flooding back and best of all, it had a real purpose to it now.
The experience and knowledge I’ve gained at Bloom over the past year has been immense. With a highly experienced Developer by my side, I found myself learning new languages, all of which I now use in day-to-day development. This wouldn’t have been possible if I had to worry about all the other aspects of creating a website.
Working in an integrated agency like Bloom, everyone and everything I need to produce my best work is around me in the office whenever I need it. I don’t need to wait for an external Photoshop expert to finish the UI designs or beg someone to try and get my website to the top of Google.
This left me thinking, how can an agency that doesn’t operate in an integrated manner even be viable? The constant stop and start of workflow due to relying on outside companies would undoubtedly drive me insane. If I wasn’t working at an integrated agency like Bloom, with all the talented people around me that there are, I wouldn’t have been able to progress to the point I’m at today. It didn’t take me long after starting at Bloom to answer most of the questions about my career that I’d been pondering for years. I firmly believe that I owe that to the integrated manner in which we work, and of course the awesome people that make it up too.
