On Saturday, six valiant Bloomers and six heavily lubed and tuned bikes headed for the big smoke in a minibus. Why? To ride the 63 miles from Kempton Park Race Course to the Brighton seafront in the annual Capital to Coast sponsored ride, that’s why. Bloom’s client, LA fitness, were the event’s main sponsors again this year, raising funds for two very worthy Down’s Syndrome charities (Norwood and the Down’s Syndrome Association).
A minibus with a boot, but no boot key resulted in the bikes having more seating than the passengers, but we snuggled up for the journey and arrived in time for a walk to the Thames and a healthy, carb-heavy supper.
We were joined on Sunday morning, bright and early, by our friend and client from ADT, Peter Miles – a very keen cyclist. He sacrificed his personal time targets to ride alongside the Bloom crew, some of whom had never ridden a distance like this before.
The ride had its ups and downs, plenty of them to be honest, taking in the Epsom Downs, Box Hill and finishing off with the sting in the tail – a mighty climb up Devil’s Dyke. Having been promised a spectacular view of the coast and the South Downs from the summit we were a little disappointed to be met by a chilly sea fret and visibility stretching as far as, oh, the other side of the road! No matter, the sense of relief outweighed the disappointment as from that moment on it was all downhill, literally, into Brighton and onto the seafront.
We all completed the course without mishap – not a fall or puncture between us! We all earned our medals and gourmet burgers, and Ragil felt he had earned an al-fresco massage, much the amusement of his on-looking team mates.
Peter-the-professional rode back to London, arriving there before we had even made it to the M25 in the minibus, clearly proving two wheels are better than four when it comes to beating the traffic, a point reinforced by the mere seven hour return journey to Leeds!
The weekend was enormous fun, was good for our health and great at demonstrating Bloom team spirit. Will we do it again? You bet we will. There’s still time to sponsor us too!
