The University of Oxford, one of the world’s finest academic institutions, wanted to uncover the community structures that show how information flows around UK cities.

Using Whisper we analysed 20 million tweets from more than 300,000 people, providing the University’s Department of Mathematics with a wealth of social data they could work with.

Our science data team then worked with the research teams at the Universities of Oxford and Strathclyde to develop and apply new mathematical frameworks to that data, creating 3D model visualisations of UK cities – each given its own unique ‘barcode’.

These models revealed the flow of information around cities and identified ‘disconnected’ communities – giving city leaders unprecedented insight to help them measure development strategies in near real time.
