‘The dress’ – #whiteandgold or #blackandblue?

Personally I wasn’t interested in ‘the dress’ but, surprisingly, many of us were. This was a great example of how a simple tweet or post can whip up an engaged social media audience in an instant.

Well, I say social media, but we can actually see from Google Trends data that the spike in conversation wasn’t confined to social platforms, as users were also searching Google for instances of ‘the dress’, as well as a huge spike for the head term, ‘dress’.

Below are the worldwide trends for the keyphrases ‘dress’ and ‘the dress’ for the past 30 days:

So, was it #whiteandgold or #blackandblue?

The graphs above show a fairly even split, although #whiteandgold had a slightly higher search trend. Therefore we have a winner…?

Ultimately, who cares? But from the conversation in Twitter and the spike in search trends, we can see that a large proportion of you did care.
